Hetkinen aikaa kirjoittaa töissä / A moment to write at work

Aamutuimaan istun yksin yhteisessä työtilassa ja ajattelin että nyt kun on vartti aikaa niin ei huvita tehdä työasioita. Siispä pidän tauon ja päivitän blogia.

Viime viikolla satoi hetken jotain lumentapaista meilläkin, vaikka etelämpänä se pysyi jopa vuorokauden. Kylmiä aamuja on ollut, yhtenä aamuna -8 astetta! Nyt on kuitenkin ollut reilusti plussalla.

I am alone in an office space in the morning and thought I'd take a 15-minute break since I have that much time to update my blog.

Las week we had a bit of snow but it melted away. In Helsinki the snow stayed for about 24 hours. We've had cold mornings, though, as cold as -8 celcius one morning! But now it has been warmer.

Muutama viikko sitten turistoimme länsi-Suomessa, muun muassa Uudessakaupungissa. Se oli kiva ja rauhallinen kaupunki kauniine puutalokeskustoineen. Majoituksemme oli Airbnb:n kautta juuri sellaisessa vanhassa puutalopihapiirissä. Kävimme muutamissa ravintoloissa ja matkalla kotiin shoppasimme kirpputoreilla. Eräs uudenkarhea vihreä mankeli jäi mietityttämään ja suunnittelin jo eilen Huittisissa että lähtisin tunnin matkalle sitä hakemaan kun alkoi kaduttaa etten heti ostanut sitä, mutta kirpputori ei vastannut puhelimeen niin jäi nyt toiseen kertaan. Länsi-Suomen reissulla tuli kuitenkin shoppailtua (jälleen) kirjetarvikkeita, kuten kirjepaperia ja tarroja.

A few weeks ago we were traveling in Western Finland, in Uusikaupunki. It is a nice and peaceful town with a beautiful old wooden houses center. We stayed in one of the old houses for one night via Airbnb. We went to a few restaurants and on the way back home we shopped in second hand stores. In one of them there was this brand new green mangle that I've still been thinking of and regret not buying it. Yesterday I was in Huittinen and thought I'd drive an hour to go buy that mangle but they didn't answer at the second hand satore so maybe another time then. But I did buy some stationery and stickers on that trip!

Teimme työkavereiden kanssa yhteisen tilauksen teippitarhaan koska minä tarvitsin ilmastointiteippiä ja he koristeteippejä jouluaskarteluun. Tilasin sitten kolme ilmastointiteippiä ja lisäksi muitakin, teippikokoelma vaan paisuu! Huomenna meillä on samaisten työkaverien kanssa suunnitteilla mennä Kamppiin Muji PopUp -myymälään. Kävin Muji-kaupassa New Yorkissa kesällä, ja tykkäsin erityisesti heidän kynistään, niin nyt täytyy käydä katsastamassa Helsingin myymälän tarjonta.

My colleagues and I ordered some tapes from Teippitarha a few weeks ago because I needed some pretty duct tape. I ended up ordering three rolls of duct tape plus other decorative tapes. My tape collection keeps expanding! Tomorrow we are planning on going to the new Muji PopUp store here in Helsinki. I visited one Muji store in New York in July and I really like their pens so now I want to check out the selection of the store in Helsinki.

Oli varmaan syyskuun puolella kun kävin Kallioon avatussa Putinki-myymälässä. Se oli paljon pienempi kuin Töölössä ja keskustassa olevat, mutta kaikki tuotteet olivat avajaisviikolla -20% alennuksessa! Niinpä sitten shoppailin oikein kunnolla.

Halfway through September I went to the new paper store called Putinki in Kallio, Helsinki. It was a lot smaller than their sotres in Töölö and the city center, but all the products were 20% off for the opening week! So I did shop away.

Suunnistuskisoissa / At the orienteering competition

Terveisiä Tartosta! Olemme jo muutaman päivän viettäneet Tartossa, joka on meille kuin toinen koti. Saavuimme maanantai-iltana, majoituimme kaksioomme ja heti seuraavana päivänä suuntasimme katsomaan suunnistuksen MM-kisoja reilun tunnin matkan päähän.

Greetings from Tartu! We've spent a few days here, this town is like a second home to us. We arrived on Monday evening, our accommodation is a one-bedroom apartment. The next morning we drove to watch the orienteering world championships about an hour south of Tartu.

Keskiviikkona oli kisoissa välipäivä, ja me vietimme sitä lähinnä pakohuonepelissä (emme päässeet ajoissa pankkiholvista ulos) ja shoppaillen. Torstaina oli vuorossa seuraava pakohuone, josta selvisimme ulos ennen ajan loppumista. Iltapäivällä sitten katselimme suunnistusta telkkarista ja illalla menimme tietenkin Raatihuoneentorille palkintojenjakoon, tulihan Suomelle sentään pronssimitali keskimatkasta!

On Wednesday there were no competitions, and we spent it in an escape room (we didn't manage to get out of the bank vault in time) and shopping. Thursday we played the next escape room game, and this time we got out in time. In the afternoon we watched orienteering on the TV and in the evening we of course went to the Town hall square for the medal ceremony. Finland did get a bronze medal in middle race!

Huomenna perjantaina lähdemme täältä majapaikastamme, jossa olisimme viihtyneet pidempäänkin. Menemme Elvaan katsomaan viestikisaa, mukavaa katsomosäätäkin on luvattu. Eilen ja tänään on sadellut. Kisapäivän päätteeksi suuntaamme sitten viikoksi partioleirille, eli nettiin ei sieltä pääse, ellei halua maksaa jotain roaming-hintoja. Ehkä pärjäilen ilmankin! :)

Tomorrow Friday we have to leave our accommodation, although we could've spent more time here. We are going to Elva to watch the relay, the weather forecast promises a nice spectator weather. Yesterday and today it has been raining. After the competitions we are going on a scout camp for a week, no Internet there, unless I want to use the expensive roaming prices. Maybe I will survive without the Internet. :)

Paketissa oli bambu-puuvillalankaa tosi kauniissa väreissä, tuikkuja, tarranauhaa, pompulakehikkoja, sukkapuikot (juuri tämän kokoisia tarvitsen eniten!), virkattu kukka, kaunis muistikirja, mehujauheita, ristikoita sekä aivan ihanan värinen kangaskassi, tykästyin kovasti! Juuri kivasti tuollaista kesämatkapuuhaa, ristikkolehden aion ottaa huomenna reissulle Pohjois-Karjalaan.

The package included bamboo-cotton yarn in beautiful colors, small candles, adhesive tape, frames for making pompoms, a crochet flower, knitting needles (exactly the right size!), a beautiful notebook, powder juice (for dyeing), crossword puzzles, and a bag with a really cool patters I love! This package includes a lot of things to do on summer trips, and I plan to take the crossword puzzles with me on our trip to Eastern Finland tomorrow.

Reissuista puheen ollen, pari kuvaa viimeisimmiltä reissuilta. Orimattilassa kynttiläpajassa oli kaunis kynttiläkellari ja samassa villatehtaan vanhoissa tiloissa a la carte -ravintola, jossa maisteltiin täät himoittua erikoissiideriä.

Speaking of trips, a few pictures of recent trips. In Orimattila there was this candle workshop where there was a beautiful candle cellar and in the same building complex that used to house an old textile factory, was a restaurant where we tried this new delicacy cider.

 

Lahdessa osallistuin ystäväni kanssa "kartanoelämää ja kirjailijoita" -aiheiselle opastetulle kierrokselle Mukkulan kartanon tiluksiin. Olipa hauska kierrellä sateessa kartanon mailla ja kuulla sen historiasta. Muut osallistujat oli lähinnä eläkeläisiä, mutta ei se menoa haitannut! Tällaisiin ex tempore -juttuihin pitäisi kyllä osallistua enemmän!

In Lahti I took part in a manor grounds tour with a friend of mine. The tour was themed "manors and authors", the manor is called Mukkulan kartano. It was really fun to tour the grounds in the rain andhear about the history of the place. All the other participants were pensioners, but it was fun nevertheless. I should definitely do more of this kind of ex tempore trips!

Partiopuuhastelua / Being a scout

En ole tainnut vielä kertaakaan kirjoitella partioharrastuksestani, joten nyt on jo aika, sillä eihän partio ole harrastus vaan elämäntapa! Liityin partioon 10-vuotiaana, joten on siinä jo pari vuosikymmentä ehditty olla mukana, suurin osa ajasta samassa lippukunnassa jopa. Lähes kymmenen vuotta olen nyt ollut lippukunnan hallituksessa, muutaman vuoden siitä jopa puheenjohtajana. Edelleen olen hallituksessa mukana mutta tapahtumiin osallistun harvakseltaan, koen enemmän olevani sellainen kokenut tukihenkilö partiossa.

I don't think I've ever posted about my scouting hobby, so it is definitely time to do so, since scouting is not a hobby but a lifestyle! I joined the scouts when I was 10, so I've spent a few decades in the scouts, most of it in the same troop. I've been in the board of our troop for nearly 10 years, a few years even as the chair. I am still in the board but I seldom take part in events other than that: my role is more like an experienced support person in our troop.

Silloin tällöin tulee kuitenkin osallistuttua hupsuihin kilpailuihin, lähdettyä kokkaamaan retkille tai järjestettyä johtajahuoltoa tai retkiä vanhemmille. Ja kesäleirille pitää tietenkin osallistua, tänä vuonna suuntana on jälleen etelänaapurissa oleva kansallinen leiri, Seiklusratas 2017.

Every once in a while I do take part in silly competitions, working as a cook at camps, and organize camps for the leaders or parents. And the summer camp is of course a must every summer. This year I'll be participating in the Estonian national camp called Seiklusratas 2017.

Viime viikonloppu kului leikkimielisessä autosuunnistuskilpailussa kaveriporukalla. Toimin meidän nelihenkisen joukkueen kuskina, ja viikonlopunna tuli ajeltua ympäri Varsinais-Suomea lähes tuhannen kilometrin verran. Kisaan sisältyi rastitehtäviä jännittävissä paikoissa, ja yhden tehtävän suoritettuaan saimme aina vihjeen seuraavalle rastille. Kyllä oli googlaustaidot tarpeen! Yöt nukuimme teltoissa, ensimmäisen yön vietimme Halikon seurantalon pihalla, ja toisen sitten Porissa Pohjanhovi-nimisen talon nurmikentillä. Yöunet jäivät vähän vähiin kiireisestä aikataulusta ja yömölystä johtuen, joten koko alkuviikon tuntui että on edelleen univelkaa viikonlopusta.

Last weekend I was in a car orienteering competition with a group of friends. I was the driver in our team of four, and during the weekend Idrove around south-western Finland for nearly a thousand kilometers. There were checkpoints during the race, and after each task we got a new clue of where to head next. Our googling skills were really put to a test! We spent both nights in a tent, the first night in the yard of a community house in Halikko, and the next one on the grass field of an event location in Pori. I didn't sleep much due to the busy schedule and the noise at night. I still felt sleep-deprived in the beginning of this week!

Neljä viikkoa sitten matkustimme puolisoni kanssa Saksaan ystäviemme luokse neljäksi yöksi. Sattumalta osui työt niin, että saatoin lähteä töiden jälkeen iltalennolla torstaina ja palata maanantain ja tiistain välisenä yönä niin että ehdin tiistaiaamuna taas töihin. Varasimme matkan vasta noin kuukausi ennen lentoja, ja edestakaiset lennot Finnairilla kahdelle maksoivat alle neljäsataa, ihan ok. :) Lensimme Frankfurtiin, josta hyppäsimme Mainziin menevään paikallisjunaan. Se ensimmäinen ilta meni kuulumisten vaihtamiseen ja majapaikassamme oleiluun. Seuraavat kaksi päivää (perjantain ja lauantain) turistoimme Mainzissa, joka on todella kaunis pienehkö yliopistokaupunki. Tai on se varmaan joku Turun kokoinen mutta tuntui jotenkin kompaktilta ja kävellen pääse kätevästi kaikkialle.

Four weeks ago my fiancé and I traveled to Germany to visit our friends for four nights. My timetable happened to allow such a longer visit, so I could leave straight from work on Thursday and return on Tuesday morning. We booked the flights about a month in advance, and return tickets with Finnair cost less than 400€, which is quite reasonable. :) We flew to Frankfurt, and hopped on a commuter train to Mainz. That first night was spent talking and catching up with our friends. The next two days (Friday and Saturday) we toured Mainz, which is a cute small(ish) university town. I think Mainz is about the size of Turku but somehow it feels more compact and you can get everywhere by foot.

Mainzissa shoppailimme paljon, ostin paljon arkastelutarvikkeita, lankaa, suklaata, teetä ja kortteja. Niin, ja äidille pitää aina tuoda magneetti. Kävimmepä parissa hääpukuliikkeessäkin, mutta mitään sopivaa ei tarttunut mukaan. Ruoka ja juoma ovat Saksassa ihanan edullisia, ja ulkona syömiseen oli tarjolla paljon paikkoja. Myös mukavia kahviloita tuntui olevan paljon.

In Mainz we did a lot of shopping, I bought a lot of craft supplies, yarn, tea, and cards. Oh yes, and mom always has to have a magnet from travels. We did visit a few bridal stores as well but didn’t find anything suitable. Food and drinks are cheaper in Germany than in Finland, and there were a lot of options for eating at a restaurant. There were a lot of nice cafes, too!

Sunnuntain aloitimme kulkemalla bussilla jonnekin kaupungin laitamille, viinipeltojen keskelle. Päädyimme teollisuusalueelle pakohuonepeliin, ja valitettavasti emme onnistuneet pääsemään ulos. Pakohuone oli todella taitavasti toteutettu ja oikeasti vaikea. Sen verran on jo niistä kokemusta, että sanoisin että tuo huone oli haastava, niin paljon tehtävää 60 minuuttiin! Etenemistämme hidasti varmaan sekin, että kommunikoimme keskenämme suomeksi, eikä pelin etenemistä kameroiden kautta tarkkaileva henkilö pystynyt seuraamaan järkeilyämme että olisi osannut tarjota vihjeitä. Silti oli hauska kokemus, ja sai taas kipinän syttymään että näihin peleihin pitää osallistua enemmän!

We started our Sunday by taking the bus to the outskirts of the city, in the middle of vine fields. We navigated to an industrial area where we took part in an escape room game. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get outside this time. The escape room was very skillfully executed and truly difficult. I’ve been to quite many games and I have to say that this was really challenging, so much to do and only 60 minutes time! Our progress was probably slowed down because the person watching our game couldn’t understand our reasoning in Finnish, so she couldn’t offer us the help we would have needed. All in all it was a fun experience, and relighted the spark to escape room games!

Mainzin laitamilta ostimme pieneltä juna-asemalta automaatista neljän hengen Schönes Wochenende –junalipun, jolla sai matkustaa hitaammilla junilla rajattomasti sen päivän aikana. Ensin menimme väärälle puolelle raiteita, ja sitten tulkitsimme aikataulua väärin mutta loppujen lopuksi saimme järkeä aikatauluihin (hakut ristissä tarkoittaa tietenkin että se juna kulkee vain arkipäivisin!) netin avustuksella ja odottelimme junaa Mannheimiin. Junissa ei ollut paljon väkeä, ja oli mukava katsella ohi vilahtavia maisemia, neuloa ja ihmetellä hassuja paikannimiä (Worms, Osterburken).

From the vine field area we found a small train station and bought a Schönes Wochenende –ticket with which four people could travel with the commuter trains unlimited during that day. At first we were on the wrong side of the tracks and had some difficulties deciphering the timetables. Finally we found out when and on which side of the track we were supposed to be (naturally the pickaxes mean office days only!) and waited for the train to Mannheim. There wasn’t a lot of people on the trains, and it was nice watching the scenery whizz by, knit, and laugh at funny place names (Worms, Osterburken).

Mannheimista jatkoimme suoraan Heidelbergiin, jonka päärautatieasemalta vaihdoimme vielä yhteen junaan, joka vei meidät pari asemaa eteenpäin vanhaan kaupunkiin. Niin kuinka kauniilta se vanha kaupunki näyttikään, kuin suoraan satukirjasta! Kiipesimme sammaleista läpikulkukäytävää kukkulalla menevälle tielle ja sieltä näkyi Heidelbergin vanha kaupunki kokonaan. Kaunista ja leppoisaa! Illalla palasimme Mainziin taas Mannheimin kautta. Oli kyllä edullinen reissu, kaikki nämä junamatkat vain noin 50€ neljältä!

From Mannheim we continued straight to Heidelberg, and from the main train station took yet another train to the old town a few stations onward. The old town was breathtakingly beautiful, like straight out of a fairy tale! We ascended trough a mossy passageway to a road up on the hill overviewing the old town of Heidelberg. It was both beautiful and pleasant to walk around. In the evening we returned to Mainz via Mannheim. It was a really cheap trip, all these train rides for four people only about 50€!

Keväiseen joenvarsikaupunki Mainziin tykästyy kyllä helposti, ja ympäriltäkin löytyy paljon kiinnostavaa ja kaunista tutstuttavaa. Suunnitelmissa olisikin palata Mainziin kesäkuussa, jos vain aikataulut antavat myöten! Junilla oli helppoa matkustaa, ja suunnittelimmekin jo usean päivän junailulippua kesäkuun reissua ajatellen niin näkee muitakin paikkoja.

You can easily become attracted to Mainz by the river in spring, and all the surrounding places are interesting and beautiful. Now our plan is to return to Mainz in June, if only the timetables permit! The trains were easy to travel with, and we are planning a several day ticket for the June trip to see other places as well.
