Kesälomani loppu meni kotosalla ja kyläillessä. Vieraita
meillä on ollut paljon ja vähän väliä. Kotona aika kului puutarhaa hoitaen,
ommellen, neuloen, värittäen ja kokkaillen; kaikkia näitä on tietenkin
siivittänyt viininjuonti hyvässä seurassa.
The end of
my summer vacation I was mainly at home and visiting a few friends. We have had
many guests. At home I’ve spent time gardening, sewing, knitting, coloring, and
cooking; all of these have been accompanied by drinking wine in good company!
Puutarhassa on edelleen valtava etanaongelma, mutta siitä
huolimatta jotkut kasvit voivat ihan hyvin eivätkä kiinnosta hietakotiloita.
Kesäkurpitsa ja palsternakka on jätetty rauhaan, pavut, lehtikaali ja lipstikka
taas ovat kotiloiden mieleen. Kesäkurpitsa teki jo muutamia hedelmiä, kunnes se
yhtäkkiä innostui kasvattamaan valtavasti uusia kukkia, en tiedä oliko silloin
kylmempi jakso vai miksi hedelmien kehitys pysähtyi ja uusia kukkia ilmaantui.
Siispä päätimme valmistaa kurpitsankukkia alkuruoaksi. Niistä tuli oikeastaan
aika hyviä! Kukkien sisään tuli tofua ja mausteita, vähän jopa valkoviiniä
samaan mössöön. Sitten kukat
kieriteltiin maissijauho-vehnäjauhoseoksessa ja paistettiin öljyssä.
There’s a
vast snail problem that still persists in the garden, but nevertheless some
plants seem to thrive and do not interest the snails. The zucchinis and
parsnips have been left alone, but the snails like beans, kale, and lovage. The
zucchinis were creating fruit but suddenly they started growing lots of new
flowers. I don’t know if it was because of a few colder days or why the
development of the fruit stopped and new flowers emerged. We decided to eat the
flowers as a starter, and they were quite good! Inside the flowers was a
filling of tofu, spices, and some white wine. The stuffed flowers were rolled in
a maize and wheat flour mixture, and then fried on the pan in cooking oil.
Olen kasvattanut muitakin syötäviä kukkia, olen käyttänyt
kehäkukkia ja krassia salaateissa, niistä saa kauniita koristeitä myös esim. Synttärikakun
päällekin tuli paljon kukkia!
I’ve grown
other edible flowers as well, I’ve used marigold and nasturtiums in salads, and
they are beautiful decorations for cakes as well. There were a lot of flowers
on my birthday cake as well!
Puutarha on kukoistanut kauniisti koko kesän, yllätyspionikin löytyi kukkapenkissä, ja koko ajan on eri kukat kukassa, mahtava puutarha!
the garden has flourished the whole summer, there was even a surprise peony in the garden. All the time there are different flowers blooming. What a wonderful garden!
Kaupasta löytyi Vege-lehti, jossa on ihania ohjeita.
Ajattelin että kaikki lehden ohjeet voisi kokeilla! Toistaiseksi olemme
kokeilleet sieltä tofua ja munakoisoa ”mapo” sekä valkopaputahnalevitettä.
Etenkin se ”mapo” -kastike oli todella hyvää, ehkä se oli se minulle tuntematon
hoi sin -kastike, joka oli niin maukasta.
I found a
new magazine for vegetarian cooking and all of the recipes were tempting! So
far we’ve tried tofu and eggplant “mapo”-style, and the white bean spread.
Especially the mapo was really good, maybe it was the hoi sin sauce which was
new to me.
Omenavuosi näyttää olevan hyvä, olihan keväällä aivan
mahtavat määrät omenankukkia, ja nyt näkyy raakileita tosi paljon. Marjavuosi
sen sijaan ei vakuuta, viinimarjoja näyttää olevan tosi vähän, ja vaikka
karviaisia on paljon niin osalla niistä on jokin ongelma. Voikohan marjapensas
olla liian tiheä… Jos punaviinimarjapensaat ovat vain liian tiheät, kun oksia
ja lehtiä on paljon niin voiko olla niin että marjoille ei jotenkin jää tilaa…
This year
seems to be a decent apple year, there was a huge amount of flowers in the spring
after all. When it comes to berries, it’s not that good a year. All the red-
and blackcurrants have been picked and there was so much less of them when compared
to last year. Especially the redcurrants are not thriving. I was wondering if a
berry bush can be too thick, when there’s so much of branches and leaves… if
there’s just not enough room for the berries then?
Kävin ulkomaisten vieraittemme kanssa poimimassa mansikoita,
ja sen jälkeen niitä on ahkerasti pakasteltu. Jossain oli vihje että kannattaa
kuivata mansikoita hieman ennen pakastamista, niin sitten ne eivät pakasteesta
sulatettaessa ole niin sellaisia mössöisiä kun nestettä on vähennetty jo ennen
pakastamista. Mansikoita tuli joku kymmenen kiloa pakastettua! Mustikoitakin on
poimittu paljon, seuraavana olisi sitten vuorossa puolukat.
We had
some friends from abroad visiting us in August, and we went to pick
strawberries with them. After that we’ve been freezing the strawberries.
Somewhere there was a tip that if you dry the strawberries for a while before
freezing them, then they won’t be so mushy when defrosted. We froze ten kilos
of strawberries this year! We also have a lot of blueberries, and next up will
be the lingonberries.
Sieniä on ollut ihan valtavasti. Jätän sienestyksen
mielelläni puolisolle joka ei hirvikärpäsistä hätkähdä, mutta lähimettään
uskaltaudun minäkin. Yhden viikonlopun partioleirillä oli ihan mielettömästä
mustatorvisieniä, ja ohjelmaan osallistuminen jäi meidän osaltamme vähän vähiin
kun koko ajan piti vain sienestää!
There are a
lot of mushrooms this year. I usually leave mushroom picking to my other half
because I don’t get along with the elk flies. One weekend we were at a scout seminar
event and there were so many black trumpets that our participation in the
program was left to a minimum because we just had to pick mushrooms!
Ostin
Tartosta uuden värityskirjan vaikka minulla on niitä tosi paljon jo ennestään. Lisäksi
löytyi sellaisia väritystarroja, niitä on hauska väritellä koska ne ovat niin
pieni urakka kerralla. Elokuussa tuli väritettyä enemmänkin, etenkin kun sattui
värityksestä kiinnostunut vieras, jonka kanssa siinä värittelimme, joimme
viiniä ja turisimme. Aivan loistava tapa viettää perjantai-iltaa!
I bought a
new coloring book from Tartu even though I have many already. I also found
coloring stickers, which are fun to color because they are a small job at one
standing. In August I’ve been coloring more than before, especially when we had
a guest who also enjoyed coloring. So we spent evenings coloring and drinking
wine. The perfect way to spend a Friday evening!
Sain amerikanserkultani tuliaisina ihanan teippilaatikon! Teippivalikoimamme varmaan tuplaantui kerralla. :) Kuvassa laatikon yllä on Viron-reissultamme ostetut teipit mukana, eli tässä tämän kesän saldo.
I got a wonderful souvenir from my American cousin. She brought me this box of paper tapes and this probably doubled our tape stash. In the picture there's also the tapes we bought from our trip to Estonia, so this is our this summer's haul of tapes.
