Huhtikuun lankayllätys / A yarn surprise of April

Huhtikuun salainen neuleystävä -paketti saapui postin noutopisteeseen torstaina, mutta olin iltakoulutuksessa niin myöhään että ehdin noutaa paketin vasta perjantaina. Kaikkia ihanuuksia löytyi paketista sekä neulomiseen että askarteluun. Kissojakin oli muistettu. Paketin lanka on tosi kaunista, Tuku woolin vihreää ja keltaista, tosi kauniita sävyjä! Lisäksi paketissa oli askartelutarvikkeita äitienpäiväkorttiin, kissanherkkutikkuja, suklaata (puoliso ilahtui, minä olen nyt sellaisella matalahiilihydraattisella ruokavaliolla että vain proteiinipatukat ovat sallittuja herkkuja), parini itse tekemä koru sekä taikapapu. Olinkin juuri ajatellut että pitää mennä ostamaan papuja kylvettäväksi niin saisi kasvimaalle paputarhan, tämä taikapapu on hyvä varaslähtö. Laitoin pavulle vettä jo eilen, ohjeen mukaan sitä pitäisi kastella muutaman päivän välein ja sitten kasvaa taikapapu! Kiitos kovasti mieluisasta paketista!

The secret knitting pal package arrived at the post office service point on Thursday, but since I was at an evening training, I fetched the package on Friday. There were so many nice things inside for both paper crafts and knitting, and even the cats got treats. The yarn in the package is really nice, Tuku wool brand in green and yellow, really beautiful tones! Additionally there were craft supplies for a mother's day card, cat treats, chocolate (my fiancé was happy for these, I am now on a low carb diet so protein bars is the only treat allowed), a piece of jewelry made by my pal, and a magic bean. I had just thought I should go buy beans to sow in the vegetable patch, and the magic bean is the perfect head start. I added water for the bean yesterday, and according to the instructions you need to water it every few days and then a magic bea will sprout! Thank you so much for the pleasant package!

Eilen aamulla olisin voinut nukkua pitkään mutta olin sopinut että noudan uuden perheenjäsenemme. Kello oli soimassa jo kuudelta (vapaapäivänä!) ja seitsemältä lähdin ajelemaan lähes puolentoista tunnin matkan hakemaan hamsteria. Valitettavasti kuvat ovat tosi huonoja, hamsteri kun on niin liikkuvainen. Mutta tässä siis muutamia. Hamsteri on lyhytkarvainen musta syyrialainen ainakin toistaiseksi nimeltään Chili, jonka kasvattaja oli antanut. Tosin jo eilen nimi rupesi muotoutumaan Silliksi, sillä täkäläiset eivät varmasti osaa lausua chiliä, ja siitä vitsillä muotoutui "sili" josta saa "silli" helpompi sanoa.

Yesterday morning I could have slept late but I had agreed to go get our new family member. My alarm went off at 6 am (on a day off!) and at 7 am I left and drove nearly an hour and a half to fetch the hamster. Unfortunately the pictures are really bad, the hamster is so lively. But here's a few anyway. This hamster is a short-haired black syrian hamster, who is, at least for now, called Chili, the name the breeder has given her). Although yesterday the name started forming into Silli because the locals here will undoubtedly not be able to pronounce "chili" but say "sili" instead, so as a joke about that the form "silli", which is easier to say, was formed. Silli is a herring in Finnish. :)

Meillä ei olekaan ollut hamstereita varmaan neljään vuoteen, mutta Leo on tottunut hamstereihin, sitä ei voisi vähempää kiinnostaa. Peikko sen sijaan tuijotti hamsteria jo kuljetusboksissa hullun kiilto silmissään. Joka kerta kun Peikko kohotti tassuaan tökkäistäkseen hamsteria, kielsin sitä ja suihkutin suihkupullostakin. Ehkä se vähitellen oppii että katsoa saa mutta koskea ei. Onneksi hamsteri ei häiriinny että joku tuijottaa sitä terraarion ulkopuolelta. Viime yönä jouduin pari kertaa älähtämään Peikolle, joka yritti hyppiä terraarion verkkokannen päälle. Jos Peikon metsästysviettiä ei saa taltutettua, hamsteri siirretään talon kissattomaan osaan.

We havent' had hamsters for about four years, but Leo is used tgo hamsters, he couldn't care less. Peikko, however, stared at the hamster in the trasport box with a mad look in his eyes. Every time Peikko lifted his paw to "touch" the hamster, I forbid and sprayed water from the spray bottle. Maybe he will learn eventually. Fortunately the hamster doesn't mind staring from the outside of the terrarium. Last night I had to shout at Peikko a few times when he tried to jump on top of the lid of the terrarium. If Peikko's instinct for hunting can't be tamed, we'll move the hamster to the part of the house where the cats aren't allowed.

Tänään on luvassa grillinostoa, kasvimaan suunnittelua ja illalla juhlat mukavien ihmisten kanssa! Niin, ja juoksuharjoitus pitää änkeä johonkin väliin.

Today we'll go shopping for a grill, plan the vegetable patch, and go to a party with nice people in the evening. Oh yes, and a running exercise needs to be done.

Haluttua lankaa / Desired yarn

Osuimme Saksassa erääseen lankakauppaan Mainzissa, ja sieltä löytyi vyyhdeittäin Wollmeise-lankaa. En tiedä, onko se enää niin haluttua ja nettikaupassa jatkuvasti loppuunmyytyä kuin aiemmin, mutta minun oli ainakin pakko saada sitä! Ostin itselleni kaksi kaunista vyyhtiä, toinen on sukkalankaa (violetti) ja toinen täyttä villaa (vihreä). Vyyhdit eivät olleet niin kalliitta kuin olin odottanut. Kahden woolmeise-vyyhdin lisäksi ostin ihanan pehmoisen vyyhdin alpakkasilkkilankaa harmaana (keskellä).

In Mainz we found a really nice yarn store, where there were skeins and skeins of Wollmeise-yarn. I don’t know if it is still so desired that it is always sold out in the online store, but I had to have it! I bought two skeins for myself, the purple one is sock yarn, and the green one is 100% wool. The skeins were not as expensive as I would have thought. Besides these two wollmeise skeins I bought one skein of alpaca-silk yarn in grey, that is unbelievable soft.

Tekeillä on tällä hetkellä nurmilintu-huivi, jota tuli neulottua junassa Saksassa.

Currently I am working on a pattern called Nurmilintu. I worked on it in a train in Germany.

Tänä keväänä olen myös väritellyt, lähinnä hiihtolomalla Kuusamossa. Laitan tähän pari kuvaa, jotka väritin tusseilla kun sen värityskirjan paperi oli niin liukasta ettei siihen olisi puuvärit tarttuneet.

This spring I’ve also done some coloring, mostly on the winter break in Kuusamo. I’ll add a few photos of colored pictures that I colored with markers since the paper was so slippery that the normal colored pencils didn’t stick.

Toissa viikonloppuna sain puuhailtua myös ompelukoneen parissa. Pitkästä aikaa sain valmiiksi muutamat alushousut vanhoista t-paidoista.

Two weeks ago I also got some sewing done. After a long time I picked up the unfinished panties project and finished them. These are from old t-shirts.

 

Lisäksi värjäsin parit kaupan alushousut, kätevää kun yhdet alushousut maksavat Tokmannilla euron tai pari, ja väriä löytyy kotoa hyvin paljon, niin sillä saa kivanväriset housut. Vihreät ja keltaiset on värjätty dylonin jauhevärillä (sellainen pussi, olisi meillä ollut niitä vanhanaikaisia nappejakin), ja vaaleanpunaiset on koolaid-mehujauheella.

I also dyed some underwear, it is practical when one pair of plain white panties in Tokmanni cost like one euro, and with dyes you can make them cooler. I had a lot of dyes at home. The yellow and the green ones are dyed with dylon powder dye (a small sachet, I would have had also the old-fashioned dye buttons), and the pink ones are dyed with koolaid-juice powder.

Odotan innolla kesää kun ehtii sitten taas kaikenlaisia mielenkiintoisia projekteja!

I am expecting the summer already when I’ll have more time on my hands for interesting projects!

Neljä viikkoa sitten matkustimme puolisoni kanssa Saksaan ystäviemme luokse neljäksi yöksi. Sattumalta osui työt niin, että saatoin lähteä töiden jälkeen iltalennolla torstaina ja palata maanantain ja tiistain välisenä yönä niin että ehdin tiistaiaamuna taas töihin. Varasimme matkan vasta noin kuukausi ennen lentoja, ja edestakaiset lennot Finnairilla kahdelle maksoivat alle neljäsataa, ihan ok. :) Lensimme Frankfurtiin, josta hyppäsimme Mainziin menevään paikallisjunaan. Se ensimmäinen ilta meni kuulumisten vaihtamiseen ja majapaikassamme oleiluun. Seuraavat kaksi päivää (perjantain ja lauantain) turistoimme Mainzissa, joka on todella kaunis pienehkö yliopistokaupunki. Tai on se varmaan joku Turun kokoinen mutta tuntui jotenkin kompaktilta ja kävellen pääse kätevästi kaikkialle.

Four weeks ago my fiancé and I traveled to Germany to visit our friends for four nights. My timetable happened to allow such a longer visit, so I could leave straight from work on Thursday and return on Tuesday morning. We booked the flights about a month in advance, and return tickets with Finnair cost less than 400€, which is quite reasonable. :) We flew to Frankfurt, and hopped on a commuter train to Mainz. That first night was spent talking and catching up with our friends. The next two days (Friday and Saturday) we toured Mainz, which is a cute small(ish) university town. I think Mainz is about the size of Turku but somehow it feels more compact and you can get everywhere by foot.

Mainzissa shoppailimme paljon, ostin paljon arkastelutarvikkeita, lankaa, suklaata, teetä ja kortteja. Niin, ja äidille pitää aina tuoda magneetti. Kävimmepä parissa hääpukuliikkeessäkin, mutta mitään sopivaa ei tarttunut mukaan. Ruoka ja juoma ovat Saksassa ihanan edullisia, ja ulkona syömiseen oli tarjolla paljon paikkoja. Myös mukavia kahviloita tuntui olevan paljon.

In Mainz we did a lot of shopping, I bought a lot of craft supplies, yarn, tea, and cards. Oh yes, and mom always has to have a magnet from travels. We did visit a few bridal stores as well but didn’t find anything suitable. Food and drinks are cheaper in Germany than in Finland, and there were a lot of options for eating at a restaurant. There were a lot of nice cafes, too!

Sunnuntain aloitimme kulkemalla bussilla jonnekin kaupungin laitamille, viinipeltojen keskelle. Päädyimme teollisuusalueelle pakohuonepeliin, ja valitettavasti emme onnistuneet pääsemään ulos. Pakohuone oli todella taitavasti toteutettu ja oikeasti vaikea. Sen verran on jo niistä kokemusta, että sanoisin että tuo huone oli haastava, niin paljon tehtävää 60 minuuttiin! Etenemistämme hidasti varmaan sekin, että kommunikoimme keskenämme suomeksi, eikä pelin etenemistä kameroiden kautta tarkkaileva henkilö pystynyt seuraamaan järkeilyämme että olisi osannut tarjota vihjeitä. Silti oli hauska kokemus, ja sai taas kipinän syttymään että näihin peleihin pitää osallistua enemmän!

We started our Sunday by taking the bus to the outskirts of the city, in the middle of vine fields. We navigated to an industrial area where we took part in an escape room game. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get outside this time. The escape room was very skillfully executed and truly difficult. I’ve been to quite many games and I have to say that this was really challenging, so much to do and only 60 minutes time! Our progress was probably slowed down because the person watching our game couldn’t understand our reasoning in Finnish, so she couldn’t offer us the help we would have needed. All in all it was a fun experience, and relighted the spark to escape room games!

Mainzin laitamilta ostimme pieneltä juna-asemalta automaatista neljän hengen Schönes Wochenende –junalipun, jolla sai matkustaa hitaammilla junilla rajattomasti sen päivän aikana. Ensin menimme väärälle puolelle raiteita, ja sitten tulkitsimme aikataulua väärin mutta loppujen lopuksi saimme järkeä aikatauluihin (hakut ristissä tarkoittaa tietenkin että se juna kulkee vain arkipäivisin!) netin avustuksella ja odottelimme junaa Mannheimiin. Junissa ei ollut paljon väkeä, ja oli mukava katsella ohi vilahtavia maisemia, neuloa ja ihmetellä hassuja paikannimiä (Worms, Osterburken).

From the vine field area we found a small train station and bought a Schönes Wochenende –ticket with which four people could travel with the commuter trains unlimited during that day. At first we were on the wrong side of the tracks and had some difficulties deciphering the timetables. Finally we found out when and on which side of the track we were supposed to be (naturally the pickaxes mean office days only!) and waited for the train to Mannheim. There wasn’t a lot of people on the trains, and it was nice watching the scenery whizz by, knit, and laugh at funny place names (Worms, Osterburken).

Mannheimista jatkoimme suoraan Heidelbergiin, jonka päärautatieasemalta vaihdoimme vielä yhteen junaan, joka vei meidät pari asemaa eteenpäin vanhaan kaupunkiin. Niin kuinka kauniilta se vanha kaupunki näyttikään, kuin suoraan satukirjasta! Kiipesimme sammaleista läpikulkukäytävää kukkulalla menevälle tielle ja sieltä näkyi Heidelbergin vanha kaupunki kokonaan. Kaunista ja leppoisaa! Illalla palasimme Mainziin taas Mannheimin kautta. Oli kyllä edullinen reissu, kaikki nämä junamatkat vain noin 50€ neljältä!

From Mannheim we continued straight to Heidelberg, and from the main train station took yet another train to the old town a few stations onward. The old town was breathtakingly beautiful, like straight out of a fairy tale! We ascended trough a mossy passageway to a road up on the hill overviewing the old town of Heidelberg. It was both beautiful and pleasant to walk around. In the evening we returned to Mainz via Mannheim. It was a really cheap trip, all these train rides for four people only about 50€!

Keväiseen joenvarsikaupunki Mainziin tykästyy kyllä helposti, ja ympäriltäkin löytyy paljon kiinnostavaa ja kaunista tutstuttavaa. Suunnitelmissa olisikin palata Mainziin kesäkuussa, jos vain aikataulut antavat myöten! Junilla oli helppoa matkustaa, ja suunnittelimmekin jo usean päivän junailulippua kesäkuun reissua ajatellen niin näkee muitakin paikkoja.

You can easily become attracted to Mainz by the river in spring, and all the surrounding places are interesting and beautiful. Now our plan is to return to Mainz in June, if only the timetables permit! The trains were easy to travel with, and we are planning a several day ticket for the June trip to see other places as well.
