Lomakuulumisia / Vacation update

Pitkästä aikaa kirjoittelen. Tulin hankkineeksi uuden älypuhelimen joten ehkä tulee helpommin päivittäneeksi blogia kun kuvat siirtyvät automaattisesti pilvipalveluun. Muutenkin olisi hyvä herätellä blogia eloon kun suunnittelin osallistuvani tämän kevään Salainen neuleystävä -tempaukseen, pitkästä aikaa.

   

It's been a long time since I last posted anything. I just bought a new smart phone so maybe I'll update more frequently now because the pictures are automatically moved to a cloud storage. Anyway it would be a good idea to revive this blog because I thought I'd take part in a secret knitting pal -project. I haven't participated in some time.


Ensinnäkin kuulumisia. Muuton jälkeen olen sopeutunut maaseutuelämään loistavasti, en ole yhtään kaivannut pääkaupunkiseudun ruuhkaista joukkoliikennettä tai asemanseutujen epämääräistä tunnelmaa. Täällä maalla mieli lepää vaikka jatkuvasti on jotain hommaa mitä pitäisi tehdä. Tälläkin hetkellä alakerrassa kylpyhuoneessa häärää putkimies joka korjaa hajonneita putkia. Sattui kunnon vesivahinko kun vähän uudenvuoden jälkeen putket jäätyivät ja tietysti olimme vielä Kanarialla silloin. Aina jotakin hajoaa ja jossain sisätiloissa sataa kun joku on poissa!

First of all what's going on. After the move I've adapted to the countryside life well, I don't miss the crowded public transport or the dingy stations of the metropolitan area. The mind is at ease here in the countryside even though there's constantly something to do around the house. For example right now there's a plumber downstairs in the bathroom fixing the plumbing that bursted in the beginning of the year due to the freezing temperatures. Everything happens to break just when we are away!

Arkipäivät kuluvat nopeasti, sillä olen töissä ja työmatkoilla välillä 5:45 - 18:00. Sen jälkeen olen näinä kahtena ensimmäisenä tämän vuoden työviikkona yrittänyt jaksaa liikkua jotenkin. Olen käynyt uimassa ja hiihtämässä. Kahteen viikkoon on mahtunut jo 25 km hiihtoakin, lyhyitä pätkiä tosin. Uintikilometrejä on tullut kolme. Nyt olen aloittanut oikein tehotreeniprojektin ja aktiivisuuttani seuraa orjapiiskuriranneke sekä tietysti kaikki mahdolliset puhelinsovellukset kuten HeiaHeia, Sports Tracker sekä GoogleFit. Toistaiseksi HeiaHeia kertoo, että olen saasvuttanut tänä vuonna 136% tavoitteestani urheilla 5 tuntia viikossa. Aktiivisuusranneke on vähän eri mieltä, sillä vuoden tavoitteesta on saavutettu 87%. Toisaalta rannekkeella on erilainen laskutapa. Saadakseni tason 2 aktiviisuuden täyteen täytyy esim. mennä kolmen tunnin kävelylle tai uida 1,5 km ja lisäksi seistä töissä ja kävellä useille julkisille kulkuneuvoille. Yhtenä päivänä sain aktiivisuuden juuri ja juuri täyteen kun ensin seisoin töissä 5h, istuin noin 1,5h, olin 40 min vesijumpassa, 30 min kuntosalilla, josta kävelin juoksumatolla 20 min ja soudin 10 min. Lisäksi vielä uin 10 min. Kävelin tuon päivän aikana yhteensä päivän aikana noin 15000 askelta, ja rannekkeen mukaan kulutin 2382 kaloria. Eilenkin sain tavoitteen juuri ja juuri sataan prosenttiin kun kävin 1 h 22 min verkkaisella hiihtolenkillä sekä 40 min reippaalla 4 km sauvakävelyllä. Lisäksi imuroin ja pyykkäsin, tuleehan niistäkin aktiivisuutta. Eli ei tuo orjapiiskuriranneke helpolla päästä!

Workdays go by very fast because I am either at work or traveling to/from between 5.45 am and 6 pm. After this I've been trying to find energy to exercise during the past two weeks. I've been cross-country skiing and swimming. In these two weeks I've already skiid 25 kilometers and swam 3 kilometers. Nopw I've started a real project and I have an activity bracelet that tracks my activity. On top of that I make use of all possible applications such as HeiaHeia, Sports Tracker, and GoogleFit. So far, HeiaHeia says I've achieved 136% of this year's goal (5 hours of exercise per week). The activity bracelet disagrees a bit, since the goal on that is only 87%. They have a bit different methods for tracking things. In order to get a 100% activity on the bracelet, I'll need to for example go for a three-hours walk, swim for 1,5 kilometers and stand or walk around at work. One day I barely reached the 100% when I stood at work for 5 hours, sat for about 1,5 hours, was at an aqua gym class for 40 minutes, 30 minutes at the gym where I walked on the treadmill for 20 minutes and rowed for 10 minutes. On top of these I swam for another 10 minutes that day. Overall I got steps on that day 15000, and according to PolarFlow, I burned 2382 calories. Yesterday I barely reached the goal by skiing leisurely for an hour and 22 minutes and going for a nordic walking for 40 minutes (4 kilometers). I also vacuumed and did laundry, those add to the activity of course. This is a real slave driver bracelet!



Kuitenkin on kummallista, että ensimmäinenä käyttöviikkona, kun olimme La Palman saarella Kanarialla, tavoite oli tosi helppo saavuttaa vain siirtyilemällä hotellialueella paikasta toiseen sekä käymällä kävelyillä tai hotellin järjestämissä lyhyissä jumpissa.

One thing is weird, though, at La Palma, the first week using the bracelet, it was really easy to meet the 100% goal just by walking around the hotel area, going for walks and taking part in the group exercise sessions organized by the hotel.

 

Siitä pääsenkin kertomaan matkastamme. Emme ole koskaan aiemmin olleet yhdessä puolisoni kanssa pakettimatkalla, jossa olisi All Inclusive -hotelli. Kuitenkin matka osoittautui aivan mahtavaksi, oli hienoa kun ei tarvitse joka päivä pohtia, mistä saisi ruokaa. Usein tuntuu että ruokapaikkaa ruvetaan etsimään liian myöhään, ja sitten nälkä tekee kiukkuiseksi ja jostain syystä mikään ei kelpaa. Tuntuuko tutulta? Hotellimme sijaitsi keskellä banaaniplantaaseja meren äärellä, joten ympärillä ei mitään ravintoloita tai edes kylää olisi ollutkaan. Hotellilta pääsi bussilla kyllä käymään muissakin paikoissa, enkä olisikaan halunnut jumittaa hotellilla kokonaista viikkoa, kuten monet turistit tuntuivat tekevän. Ei ole mielestäni mitään järkeä lähteä ulkomaille lomalle, vieraaseen maahan ja vieraaseen kulttuuriin mikäli ei aio tutustua siihen.

Which lead me to talk about our trip to the Canary Islands. We've never before been to a package deal all inclusive -trip with my fiance. The trip was really great, it was wonderful not to have to think about where to find food, and which restaurant to go to. Often it seems that you are looking for a place to eat too late, and hunger makes everything more difficult! Does it sound familiar? The hotel was located in the middle of banana plantations by the sea, so there were no restaurants or even a village nearby. There was a bus connection from the hotel to other locations, and I wouldn't have wanted to be stuck at the hotel anyway, like many tourists seemed to be doing. I think it doesn't make sense to travel abroad to a different country and a different culture without getting to know it.

Säät eivät olleet erityisen hyvät sillä suurin osa päivistä oli todella tuulisia. Tarkoitan todella tuulisia. Sillä lailla että kun yritimme eräänä päivänä mennä altaalle rantatuoliin lukemaan, niin tuolit ja pöydät ja drinkitkin lentelivät. Luovutimme ja menimme huoneeseemme lukemaan. Yksi suomalaisturisti sanoi osallistuneensa hotellin zumbatunnille saadakseen edes hetkeksi villapaidan pois päältään. No, se nyt oli ehkä vähän liioittelua. Lämpötila oli noin 20 astetta mutta tuuli tietenkin teki siitä kylmemmän tuntuisen. Kuitenkin kävimme paljon kävelyillä, yleensä pärjäsi shortseilla/hameella sekä t-paidalla ja sandaaleilla, huivin saattoi kietoa harteille jos tuli vilu. Osallistuimme kävelyretkelle vuorilla olevassa kansallispuistossa ja ilman ryhmää kävelimme yhtä tulivuorireittia muutaman tunnin.

The weather was not that good due to heavy wind on most days. I mean really heavy wind. One day we attempted to read at the pool area in sunbeds, but the sunbeds, tables, and even drinks went flying. So we gave up and read books in our hotel room. A Finnish tourist said she participated in the zumba lesson at the hotel just so that she could lose her sweater for a while. That sound a bit like exaggerating to me. The temperature was around +20 celcius degrees but due to the wind it felt colder. We went for a lot of walks, and usually I wore shorts or a short skirt, a t-shirt and sandals, and that was enough. You could always wrap a shawl around your shoulders if it felt too chilly.We took part in a hiking trip on the mountains in a beautiful national park, and one day we hiked without a group on a volcano trail for a few hours.

La Palma on todella kaunis saari, eikä siellä ole niin paljon turisteja kuin monilla muilla Kanariansaarilla. Hotellialue oli valtava ja ruoka oli erinomaista. Tuli syötyä ihan liikaa ja jatkuvasti oli ähky. Myös juomat kuuluivat hintaan, ja niitäkin tuli kittailtua, etenkin roseviiniä ja cavaa. Näin opikelijamentaliteetilla varustettujen matkalaisten mielestä kaikki irti mikä lähtee ja koska kaikki tuntui ilmaiselta, niin piti jatkuvasti olla syömässä ja juomassa. Loppujen lopuksi uskon että matka tuli halvemmaksi all inclusivcella kuin että ruoat ja juomat olisi pitänyt ostaa erikseen ja matkat ja majoitus erikseen. Suunnittelin jo että lähdemme Dominikaaniseen Tasavaltaan saman hotelliketjun all inclusive -matkalle!



La Palma is a truly beautiful island, and there's less tourists than on most of the other Canary Islands. The hotel area was huge and the food was excellent. We at too much all the time, and even the drinks were included. I especially enjoyed plenty of rosé wine and cava. When you think like a student, and everything feels free, you end up eating and enjoying the drinks all the time! In the end I believe this kind of package deal was cheaper than if we would've bought all meals, accommodation, and flights separately. I am already planning our next all inclusive trip to The Dominican Republic, where they have the same hotel chain!

Ajattelin esitellä muutamin kuvin viime aikojen muuttoon ja uuteen kotiin liittyviä projekteja.

Vaatekaappi tyhjänä / An empty closet

Vaatekaappi. Kaappi, jonka olin suunnitellut vaatekaapiksi oli täynnä lastenkirjoja, videoita ja Aku Ankkoja. Jälkimmäiset sain kaupattua alkuperäiselle omistajalleen, joka noutanee ne jossain vaiheessa. Videoista suurin osa lensi vaan roskiin (ovatko ne ongelmajätettä?) ja lastenkirjoista on valikoitu muutamia säästettäviä. Kaapin sisällön työstäminen on edelleen kesken, mutta itse kaappi on jo vaatekäytössä. Ensi piti tyhjentää kaappi, pyyhkiä kaikki hyllyt, ostaa hyllynpidikkeitä ja tukea yksi keikkuva hylly niillä paremmin, ja kiristää saranaa koska toinen ovi repsotti. Sitten sinne sai järjestettyä vaatteet nätisti!

Closet. This closet that I had planned to use for my clothes was full of children’s books, video tapes, and Donald Duck –comics. The latter I managed to get the original owner to promise to take them, he will pick them up sometime later. The majority of the video tapes went straight to the trash bin, and some of the children’s books we chose to keep. The work on the content of the closet is still unfinished, but the closet now hosts my clothes in a neat order. Before I put the clothes in, I had to wipe the shelves, secure one shelf with brackets and tighten one hinge because the left door was loose. 

Postilaatikko / The letter box

Postilaatikko. Ennen kuin saimme hankittua postilaatikon, tuli kirjeitämme naapurin postilaatikkoon. Onneksi ne saatiin sieltä ihan kätevästi. Nyt on postilaatikko ja siinä numero ja nimetkin! Postilaatikoltamme on maailman kaunein maisema ja mielettömät auringonlaskut.

Letter box. Before we had bought a new letter box, out mail arrived in our neighbor’s letter box. Fortunately this is not a problem and we got our mail. Now we have a brand new mailbox with the correct number and even our names on it! At the letter box there is a phenomenal view and sunsets to die for.

Puolet cd:istä pakattu / Half of the CDs already packed

CD-hyllykkö. Tämä tarpeeton huonekalu oli täynnä cd:itä ja muuta rojua. Tyhjensin cd:t laatikoihin ja putsasin hyllyn. Yritin ehdottaa äidilleni että se olisi täydellinen muumimukihylly, saisi keräilykokoelman kauniisti esille mutta hän vetosi tilanpuutteeseen ja hylly tulee päätymään kierrätykseen. Ellei joku blogin lukijoista halua hakea sitä käyttöön?

Muumimukihylly? / Moomin mug shelf?

CD-shelf. This unneccessary piece of furniture was full of CDs and other junk. I emptied the cd’s into boxes and cleaned the shelf. I tried suggesting my mom to get the shelf for her collection of Moomin mugs, but she appealed to the lack of space and the shelf will end up in the recycling center. Unless one of the blog readers wishes to fetch it for their own use?

Rimat autossa / The wooden bars

Kissaverkko. Meillä on kolme kissaa. Yksi niistä on asunut nykyisessä uudessa kodissamme koko elämänsä (9 vuotta), ja kaksi on meillä ollut Helsingissä. Nyt on kova aikomus tutustuttaa nämä kolme toisiinsa. Kun on kyse aikuisista kissoista, tulee noudattaa erityistä varovaisuutta ja kärsivällisyyttä. Ei saa kiirehtiä. Toistaiseksi kissoista kaksi pääkaupunkilaista ovat olleet yläkerrassa ja maalaiskissa alakerrassa. Portaikossa on ovi. Ajatukseni oli rakentaa oviaukon tilalle jonkin sortin verkko-ovi. Ostin Terrasta puurimoja sekä kulmarautoja. Rimat eivät harmikseni mahtuneetkaan autoon, ihan jäi kymmenestä sentistä kiinni. Soitin isomman auton (pakettiauto) paikalle. Kumma kyllä rimat eivät mahtuneet isoonkaan autoon. En millään jaksanut mennä takaisin Terraan sahauttamaan rimoja lyhemmiksi. Enkä sitä paitsi tiennyt tarkasti minkä mittaisia tarvitsisin. Pakko oli siis ajella takaluukku raollaan, ongelmana vaan oli ettei sitä saanut millään sidottua niin ettei se töyssyissä ponnahtaisi kokonaan auki. Onneksi mukana on käsityö, ja luonnonvalkoinen seitsemän veljestä –lanka pelasti. Kiinnitimme langalla takaluukun takapyyhkimestä takaluukun lukkoon. Sitten ajelin varovasti kymmenen kilometrin matkan kotiin pakettiauton seuratessa perässä vahtimassa että takaluukku pysyi vain raollaan ja rimat sisällä. Tästä episodista viisastuneena nyt löytyy autosta sekä narua että puukko. :)

Verkon kiinnitys / Attaching the grid

Cat frame. We have three cats. One of them has lived in our current new home all her life (9 years), and two of them have lived with us in Helsinki. Now the intention is to get them all acquainted with each other. When it comes to adult cats, a huge amount of patience and caution is needed. You can’t rush this. So far two of the cats (the Helsinki cats) have lives upstairs, and the countryside cat has lived downstairs. There’s a door in the staircase. My thought was to build a wooden frame with a metal grid to replace the door. I bought two wooden bars and four angle irons. To my surprise the bars didn’t fit in my car, it was a matter of two inches or so. I called for the bigger car (van) to help me but surprisingly the bars didn’t fit into the van either! I had no energy to walk back to the hardware store to have the bars sawed, besides, I didn’t know exactly what length I would need the bars to be. So I had to drive with the trunk door a bit ajar, the problem then was that we had no rope to tie the door in place so that it wouldn’t bounce wide open in every bump. Luckily I had my handicraft projects with me, and the off-white woolen sock yarn saved the day. We tied the trunk door from the back windshield wiper to the lock of the door with the white yarn. Then I drove extremely carefully for the ten kilometers with the trunk ajar and the van following behind watching that the trunk door stays down and the bars inside. What did we learn? Now there’s rope and a knife in the car. :)

Olin aiemmin ostanut Kärkkäiseltä ”eläinverkkoa” noin kolmemetrisen palan. Ensin piti mittailla tarkkaan jotta kehikko on oikean kokoinen, sitten nidottiin siihen verkkoa ja leikkasin ylimenevät osat. Lopputulos oli hieno vaikka itse sanonkin. Ainoa ongelma on, että Peikko on sellainen luihu ja liukas luikku että se livahti kiinnityksestä huolimatta kehikon raosta alakertaan. Sen jälkeen viritin toisenkin narun ja rautalankalenkin pitämään kehikkoa paikoillaan. Ylä- ja alakerran välillä kulkeminen ei ole kovin helppoa nyt kun ensin pitää irrotella naruja ja sitten vielä nostaa koko kehikko ylös portaisiin, joten toivottavasti tätä viritelmää ei tarvitse kovin kauaa pitää! Kissat ovat lähinnä katselleet toisiaan turvallisen välimatkan päästä, ja Mörri vaan murisee yläkerran kissoille.

I had previously bought ”animal netting” from a store called Kärkkäinen. It was a roll of about three meters. First I had to take accurate measurements in order for the wooden frame to be the right size. Then we stapled the metal grid into the frame and I cut the excess parts off with wire cutters. The finished product is really pretty, even if I say so myself! the only problem now is that Peikko is such a slippery worm that he managed to ply his way downstairs even though the whole frame was attached with a string. After this I attached another string with a metal loop to hold the frame in place. Going upstairs and downstairs is not easy now when you have to untie the strings first and then lift the whole frame up the stairs, so hopefully we don’t have to have this kind of arrangement for long. The cats have thus far only looked at each other from a safe distance, and Mörri keeps growling at the upstairs cats.

Kukkahylly. Helsingissä meillä oli kellarissa hylly, joka on mulla aiemmin ollut terraariohyllynä silloin kun hamstereita oli paljon. Nyt se uhkasi jäädä työttömäksi uudessa kodissamme. Keksin tehdä siitä autotalliin kukka- ja istutustarvikehyllyn. Käsittelemätön puu muuttuu kuitenkin tosi pian rumaksi multaisten tavaroiden alla ja päätin päällystää hyllytasot vanhoilla vahakankailla. Mielestäni lopputulos oli aika kiva! Ja opin käyttämään pelottavaa niittipyssyä (jostain syystä niitä on tässä taloudessa kolme kappaletta). Nyt voidaan hyvällä omallatunnolla hankkia uusi vahakangas askarteluliinaksi koska silppusin kaksi edellistä hyllynpäällisiksi.

Gardening stuff shelf. In Helsinki, we had a shelf in the basement. It had functioned as a shelf for hamster terrariums in the time I had several hamsters. Now we couldn’t think of a good use for the shelf in our new home. I figured I could put it in the garage to hold flower pots and other gardening equipment. The untreated wood tends to get really dirty when holding pots with dirt and soil, so I decided to coat the shelves with used oilcloth. I must admit that the result looks pretty good! And I learned how to use the intimidating staple gun (for some reason there are three of them in this household). Now, with a clear conscience, we can buy new oilcloth to put on the handicrafting tables because I cut the two previous ones into pieces.

Töissä / At the Office

Kirjoittelen tätä töissä. Neljä opiskelijaa työstää esityksiä blogeista tässä atk-luokassa.

I am writing this at work. Four students are working on their blog presentations in this computer lab.

Ilta-aurinko kotiportilta / The sunset from our gate

Nyt on hieman haikea fiilis, kun eilen luovutimme Helsingin-kotimme avaimet uudelle asukkaalle, ja lähdimme kodistamme viimeistä kertaa. Ehdimme neljä vuotta asua samassa paikassa, ja siinä ajassa kyllä jo kiintyy ympäristöön ja etenkin ihmisiin (naapurit). Onneksi naapurit ovat liikkuvaisia, ja tulevat varmasti kyläilemään uuteen kotiimme. Yksi asia muutossa unohtui: pyykit jäivät kuivaushuoneeseen! Onneksi naapureittemme avaimilla pääsee kellaritiloissa olevaan kuivaushuoneeseen ja sain sovittua erään naapurin avaamaan minulle oven tänään iltapäivällä.

Currently I am feeling a bit down since yesterday we gave the keys of our apartment to the new tenant, and left our home for good. Four years we’ve been living in the same place, and in that time we’ve become attached to the surroundings and especially our lovely neighbors. Luckily the neighbors are sure the visit us in our new home. One thing we managed to forget in the old place: our laundry was drying in the drying room! Fortunately the keys of our neighbors work on the doors to the basement and the drying room, so I’ve organized for a neighbor to open doors for me this afternoon.

Askarteluhuone / Craft room

Nyt asun sitten maaseudulla. En ole koskaan aiemmin asunut maalla, ainoastaan vähintään sadantuhannen asukkaan kaupungeissa. No, olihan siinä välissä toki puolitoista vuotta Yhdysvalloissa Chapel Hill –nimisessä alle 60 000 asukkaan pikkukaupungissa, mutta onhan siellä kolme kertaa uuden kodin paikkakunnan verran porukkaa.

Now I live in the countryside. I’ve never lives in the countryside, only in cities with a population of at least 100 000. Well, okay, I lived in The States for a year and a half in a town called Chapel Hill with a population of less than 60 000. But still, even that amount of people is three times bigger than the municipality of our new home.

Uusi postilaatikko! / The new letter box!

Muutto sujui loppuhärdelliä lukuun ottamatta yllättävän hyvin; tavarat on siirretty. Onneksi veimme yhden pakettiautollisen tavaraa vielä sunnuntaina, sillä eilen tiistaina, kun oli viimeinen kyyti, tavarat eivät millään olisi mahtuneet. Eilen pakettiauto tuli täydemmäksi kuin kertaakaan aiemmin, tavarapalapeli oli melkoinen, ja kuorman purkaminen haastavaa, kun joka väli oli tehokkaasti täytetty. Tuntui, että jos jostain vetää, koko rakennelma kaatuu tai jotain muuta putoaa.

The actual move went alright even though there was a bit of a last-minute panic: all the stuff has been moved. Luckily we had driven one set of stuff with the van already on Sunday, since the last things would not have fit in the van on Tuesday. Yesterday the van was fuller than any of the times before, and the jigsaw puzzle with the stuff was considerable. The unloading was a tricky thing because there was stuff in the smaller niches and if you tried to pull something out, the whole thing would collapse, or something else would fall out.

Muuttokuormaa / A miracle of packing

Puutarhauutisiakin on! Munakoiso on kukkien lisäksi tekemässä yhtä hedelmää! Sellainen pikkuinen söpönen munakoiso. Siihen nähden, että kasveja on kaksitoista, on yksi pikkuinen munakoiso aika vähän, mutta ainakin on parannusta viime vuodesta: kaksi taimena ostettua kasvia: ei yhtään hedelmää. Tomaatteja on melko paljon, ja mystinen kurkunnäköinen keltakukkakasvikin tekee ainakin kolmea pientä avomaakurkkua. Viime yönä lämpötila laski jonnekin viiden asteen tienoille ulkona, joten saa nähdä, kuinka kauan uskallan pitää kasveja ulkona. Tosin sisälläkin tuntui (ainakin viime yönä) vilpoiselta, kun lämmitys ei ole vielä päällä. Ensi vuonna voisin luoda oikein kunnollisen kasvimaan, sain lapionkin synttärilahjaksi. :)

Oh, I also have some gardening news! The eggplants are creating one tiny fruit among the multiple flowers! A teeny-tiny eggplant. Compared to the fact that there’s twelve plants, and one tiny fruit, it is not much, but at least it is better than last year when I had bought two plants, and got no fruit from them. I have quite a lot of tomatoes, and the mysterious cucumber plant with yellow flowers is now forming at least three small cucumbers. Last night the outside temperature reduced to somewhere about +5 Celsius degrees, so I’ll have to monitor the weather forecast when considering when to take the plants inside. Although it is quite cold inside as well, at least last night because the heating is not on yet. Next year I plan on creating an actual vegetable patch in the yard, I just got a sturdy spade as a birthday gift!
