Partiopuuhastelua / Being a scout

En ole tainnut vielä kertaakaan kirjoitella partioharrastuksestani, joten nyt on jo aika, sillä eihän partio ole harrastus vaan elämäntapa! Liityin partioon 10-vuotiaana, joten on siinä jo pari vuosikymmentä ehditty olla mukana, suurin osa ajasta samassa lippukunnassa jopa. Lähes kymmenen vuotta olen nyt ollut lippukunnan hallituksessa, muutaman vuoden siitä jopa puheenjohtajana. Edelleen olen hallituksessa mukana mutta tapahtumiin osallistun harvakseltaan, koen enemmän olevani sellainen kokenut tukihenkilö partiossa.

I don't think I've ever posted about my scouting hobby, so it is definitely time to do so, since scouting is not a hobby but a lifestyle! I joined the scouts when I was 10, so I've spent a few decades in the scouts, most of it in the same troop. I've been in the board of our troop for nearly 10 years, a few years even as the chair. I am still in the board but I seldom take part in events other than that: my role is more like an experienced support person in our troop.

Silloin tällöin tulee kuitenkin osallistuttua hupsuihin kilpailuihin, lähdettyä kokkaamaan retkille tai järjestettyä johtajahuoltoa tai retkiä vanhemmille. Ja kesäleirille pitää tietenkin osallistua, tänä vuonna suuntana on jälleen etelänaapurissa oleva kansallinen leiri, Seiklusratas 2017.

Every once in a while I do take part in silly competitions, working as a cook at camps, and organize camps for the leaders or parents. And the summer camp is of course a must every summer. This year I'll be participating in the Estonian national camp called Seiklusratas 2017.

Viime viikonloppu kului leikkimielisessä autosuunnistuskilpailussa kaveriporukalla. Toimin meidän nelihenkisen joukkueen kuskina, ja viikonlopunna tuli ajeltua ympäri Varsinais-Suomea lähes tuhannen kilometrin verran. Kisaan sisältyi rastitehtäviä jännittävissä paikoissa, ja yhden tehtävän suoritettuaan saimme aina vihjeen seuraavalle rastille. Kyllä oli googlaustaidot tarpeen! Yöt nukuimme teltoissa, ensimmäisen yön vietimme Halikon seurantalon pihalla, ja toisen sitten Porissa Pohjanhovi-nimisen talon nurmikentillä. Yöunet jäivät vähän vähiin kiireisestä aikataulusta ja yömölystä johtuen, joten koko alkuviikon tuntui että on edelleen univelkaa viikonlopusta.

Last weekend I was in a car orienteering competition with a group of friends. I was the driver in our team of four, and during the weekend Idrove around south-western Finland for nearly a thousand kilometers. There were checkpoints during the race, and after each task we got a new clue of where to head next. Our googling skills were really put to a test! We spent both nights in a tent, the first night in the yard of a community house in Halikko, and the next one on the grass field of an event location in Pori. I didn't sleep much due to the busy schedule and the noise at night. I still felt sleep-deprived in the beginning of this week!

Mutta kyllä tuo on vaan niin mahtava tapahtuma, tämä oli minulle jo neljäs kerta osallistumassa, ihanaa että joku jaksaa järjestää tuollaisia seikkailuja! Hyvällä porukalla on kiva kisata, joten kiitokset joukkueelleni (jos tätä satutte lukemaan)!

But this race/competition was just so great, this was the fourth time I took part. I am so glad that someone has the energy to organize this kind of intrigueing adventures! It is nice to compete in a great company, so thanks to my team members, if you happen to see this!

Neljä vuotta on tullut asuttua tässä kämpässä pääkaupungissa, ja nyt on edessä muutto maaseudulle. Tuleva koti ei toki ole vieras, vaan olen saanut vietellä siellä eripituisia pätkiä jo seitsemän vuoden ajan.

I’ve lived here in this apartment in Helsinki for four years now. It is time to move to the countryside. Our future home is already familiar to me since I’ve been spending time there for the past seven years already.

Vielä elokuu on kuitenkin aikaa fiilistellä täällä opiskelija-asunnossa ja tavata kaikkia ihania naapureita, jotka varmasti tulevat kyläilemään vaikka tulemmekin asumaan vähän kauempana. Vähitellen olemme muuttaneet tavaroitamme, varmaan jo parin kuukauden ajan, mutta silti tavaraa tuntuu aina vaan riittävän. Nyt on muutossa se vaihe, että kaikki tavarat ovat aina väärässä paikassa. Odotan innolla uuden kodin laittamista, puutarhahommia (tosin eilen meinasi mennä hermo marjapuskassa vaaniviin ampiaisiin) ja maalaiselämän rauhallisuutta. Talossa ei ole mitään välitöntä remonttihommaa, mutta vähitellen on tarkoitus uusia joitakin huoneita.

There’s still time to spend time here in Helsinki until the end of August. These apartments are student apartments, so we have the most amazing neighbors, who will definitely visit us even though we are a bit further away. Slowly but surely we’ve been relocating stuff, probably for about two months now, and still there seems to be a huge amount of stuff here! Now the moving process is at the state when everything seems to be in the wrong place. I am looking forward to setting up the new home, gardening (although yesterday I was losing my mind with the evil wasps hiding in the red- and blackcurrant bushes) and the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside. There’s no immediate need for renovation in the house, but we have been planning on renewing some of the rooms.

Kesäloma on kulunut lukiessa kirjoja, matkaillessa, kasveja ihmetellessä, ruoanlaitossa, ystäviä tavatessa; noin ylipäätään lomaillessa. Alkukesästä olimme parilla ulkomaanmatkalla (Tartto ja Zagreb) ja heinäkuun loppupuolella oli partioleiri Roihu 2016. Nyt edessä on paluu kouluun ja muuttopuuhat jatkuvat. Sitten syyskuussa voidaan miettiä tupaantuliaisia (useita tietenkin!) sekä projekteja (kaatuneen puun pilkkomista, kitkemistä, kasvimaan muokkaus, aitaaminen ja pohjatyöt näin syksyllä, tavaroiden sorttaus hävitettäviin, kierrätettäviin ja pidettäviin ja boordien/tapettien poistoa ja huoneiden maalaamista/tapetointia). Tekeminen ei yli satavuotiaassa maalaistalossa kyllä lopu, ja yllätyksiä tulee jatkuvasti. Nytkin yhden vessan lavuaarin tiiviste vuotaa, ja lavuaarin alla on vati keräämään vedet. :D

During my summer vacation I’ve been reading books, traveling, gardening., cooking, meeting friends: well, spending a holiday. In the beginning of June we made a couple of trips abroad (Tartu and Zagreb) and in the end of July there was the scout camp Roihu 2016. Now it’s back to school and then continue with the move. In September we are planning on hosting a housewarming party (or several!) and different kinds of projects (choppign down a fallen tree, building a vegetable patch with a fence, sorting stuff into keep, throuw away, and recycle, removing wallpapers and painting rooms). There’s an enormopus amount of stuff to do in a house that is more than 100 years old, and there’s bound to be new surprises all the time. For example now the sink in one bathroom is leaking in the insulation, so there’s just a bucket underneath the sink until we have time to fix it. :D

Aloitimme keittokirjaprojektin: kaikista kivoista keittokirjoista tulee tehdä reseptit järjestyksessä. Eräässä kirjassa oli aamupalana australialaiset pannarit ja karamellisoidut luumut. / We started a cook book challenge: every recipe must be made in order from each book. One book contained a breakfast recipe of Australian pancakes with caramelized plums
