SNY lokakuu / Secret package October

Olinkin jo odotellut lokakuun pakettia jonkin aikaa, ja tällä viikolla se viimein saapui. Paketista löytyi kivoja alpakkalankoja ja hauska virkattu tonttu, joka pääsi ikkunalaudalle vahtimaan. Pätkävärjätty lanka ei niin kovin ole mieleeni (kuten ilmoittautumisessa sanoinkin) mutta tämä on harvinaisen hillitynvärinen, joten ehkä siitä voi jotain syntyä. Asustelehti oli minulle uusi ja sieltä löytyikin muutama mukavankuuloinen ohje! Kiitos parilleni paketista!

I had been waiting for the October package for some time, and this week it finally arrived. There were some nice alpaca yarn balls inside, and a fun crocheted elf, which found its way onto the windowsill to have a lookout. The yarn with the rapid color changes is not so much into my liking (as I mentioned in my information sheet) but this one is not so over-the-top so it might form into something. The magazine with the accessory patterns is new to me, and I found a few nice patterns there! Thank you for the package!

 

 

Tänään on kuulemma tilastollisesti vuoden harmain päivä, mutta meillä sitä on vietetty puutarhahommissa aurinkoisessa säässä. Sain viimein laajennettua kasvimaata, ja siihen roudattiin kompostimultaa päälle. Kylvin juureksia (mm. palsternakkaa, punajuurta, porkkanaa) sekä muutamaa yrttiä (tilli, persilja) jo näin syksyllä, kuulemma kasvaisivat keväällä aiemmin. Peitin istutukset lehdillä; toivotaan että onnistuvat!

Today is apparently statistically the grayest day of the year, but here we've had a sunny day with plenty of yard work. I finally managed to expand my vegetable patch, got some compost soil on top, and sowed some root vegetables (parsnip, redbeet, carrot, etc.) and a few herbs (dill, parsley) already in the autumn, so they should sprout earlier in the spring. I covered them in leaves, so let's hope they succeed!

Sukkia / Socks

Onhan vähän tullut neulottuakin, kahdet aikuisten sukat ja kahdet vauvansukat. Vihreästä Drops Delightista tein ensimmäisen sukan silloin keväällä eräässä kahdeksan tunnin koulutuksessa, ja toinen on saanut odottaa itseään ennen kuin eilen sain sen viimeisteltyä. Vaaleanpunaiset sukat taas aloitin lentokoneessa matkalla Yhdysvaltoihin, malli on yksi mun suosikeista: Embossed leaves. Lisäksi olen tehnyt kahdet junasukat, tosin toiset ehdin jo lähettää pian syntyvälle ehtimättä ottaa kuvaa, ja toiset ovat lehtisukkien langanjämästä (sama lanka, noin eri värinen kuva!).

I have been knitting something! I made two pairs of adult socks and two pairs of baby socks. The green socks are made from Drops Delight, and the first one I knitted last spring at an eight-hour training, and the other one I just finished yesterday. I started the pink socks on the airplane to USA, the pattern is one of my favorites: embossed leaves. I also knitted two pairs of baby socks called "junasukat" (train socks); the other pair I already sent to the recipient who will be born any day now, and I didn't remember to take a picture. The other pair is from the same yarn as the embossed leaves socks, the same yarn, such a different shade in the picture!

Tällä hetkellä minulla on "enää" 14 neulomisprojektia kesken, ja olen kehitellyt sääntöjä että uusia asusteita ei saa aloittaa ennen kuin on jotain saanut valmiiksi. Perussukat ovat poikkeus, niitä pitää aina olla yhdet kesken sillä se on niin aivoton projekti että joskus ei vaan jaksa muuta.

At the moment I have "only" 14 knitting projects in the making, and I've come up with rules that I cannot start new accessories before I finish something. Basic socks are an exception, since I always need to have one pair of basic socks on the needles because sometimes I have no energy to do anything more complicated.

Ystäväni Amerikassa näytti istuttamaansa inkivääriä, ja siitä innostuin itsekin kokeilemaan kun yksi juurenpala näytti nahistuneelta ja siitä jo puski ulos jotain vihreää. Siispä hautasin sen pikkupalan ruukkuun ja nyt, parin viikon päästä, sieltä on tulossa peräti kaksi inkiväärinvartta!

A friend of mine in USA showed her ginger plant, and I also decided to try it because a piece of ginger root looked crumbled and there was already a tiny green sprout. So I buried the tiny piece of root into a pot, and now - two weeks later - there's two ginger stems sprouting!

Kodinhengetärhommia / Domestic jobs

Kesälomani loppu meni kotosalla ja kyläillessä. Vieraita meillä on ollut paljon ja vähän väliä. Kotona aika kului puutarhaa hoitaen, ommellen, neuloen, värittäen ja kokkaillen; kaikkia näitä on tietenkin siivittänyt viininjuonti hyvässä seurassa.

The end of my summer vacation I was mainly at home and visiting a few friends. We have had many guests. At home I’ve spent time gardening, sewing, knitting, coloring, and cooking; all of these have been accompanied by drinking wine in good company!

 

Puutarhassa on edelleen valtava etanaongelma, mutta siitä huolimatta jotkut kasvit voivat ihan hyvin eivätkä kiinnosta hietakotiloita. Kesäkurpitsa ja palsternakka on jätetty rauhaan, pavut, lehtikaali ja lipstikka taas ovat kotiloiden mieleen. Kesäkurpitsa teki jo muutamia hedelmiä, kunnes se yhtäkkiä innostui kasvattamaan valtavasti uusia kukkia, en tiedä oliko silloin kylmempi jakso vai miksi hedelmien kehitys pysähtyi ja uusia kukkia ilmaantui. Siispä päätimme valmistaa kurpitsankukkia alkuruoaksi. Niistä tuli oikeastaan aika hyviä! Kukkien sisään tuli tofua ja mausteita, vähän jopa valkoviiniä samaan mössöön. Sitten kukat kieriteltiin maissijauho-vehnäjauhoseoksessa ja paistettiin öljyssä.

There’s a vast snail problem that still persists in the garden, but nevertheless some plants seem to thrive and do not interest the snails. The zucchinis and parsnips have been left alone, but the snails like beans, kale, and lovage. The zucchinis were creating fruit but suddenly they started growing lots of new flowers. I don’t know if it was because of a few colder days or why the development of the fruit stopped and new flowers emerged. We decided to eat the flowers as a starter, and they were quite good! Inside the flowers was a filling of tofu, spices, and some white wine. The stuffed flowers were rolled in a maize and wheat flour mixture, and then fried on the pan in cooking oil.

 

Olen kasvattanut muitakin syötäviä kukkia, olen käyttänyt kehäkukkia ja krassia salaateissa, niistä saa kauniita koristeitä myös esim. Synttärikakun päällekin tuli paljon kukkia!

I’ve grown other edible flowers as well, I’ve used marigold and nasturtiums in salads, and they are beautiful decorations for cakes as well. There were a lot of flowers on my birthday cake as well!

 

Puutarha on kukoistanut kauniisti koko kesän, yllätyspionikin löytyi kukkapenkissä, ja koko ajan on eri kukat kukassa, mahtava puutarha!

the garden has flourished the whole summer, there was even a surprise peony in the garden. All the time there are different flowers blooming. What a wonderful garden!

Kaupasta löytyi Vege-lehti, jossa on ihania ohjeita. Ajattelin että kaikki lehden ohjeet voisi kokeilla! Toistaiseksi olemme kokeilleet sieltä tofua ja munakoisoa ”mapo” sekä valkopaputahnalevitettä. Etenkin se ”mapo” -kastike oli todella hyvää, ehkä se oli se minulle tuntematon hoi sin -kastike, joka oli niin maukasta.

I found a new magazine for vegetarian cooking and all of the recipes were tempting! So far we’ve tried tofu and eggplant “mapo”-style, and the white bean spread. Especially the mapo was really good, maybe it was the hoi sin sauce which was new to me.

 

Omenavuosi näyttää olevan hyvä, olihan keväällä aivan mahtavat määrät omenankukkia, ja nyt näkyy raakileita tosi paljon. Marjavuosi sen sijaan ei vakuuta, viinimarjoja näyttää olevan tosi vähän, ja vaikka karviaisia on paljon niin osalla niistä on jokin ongelma. Voikohan marjapensas olla liian tiheä… Jos punaviinimarjapensaat ovat vain liian tiheät, kun oksia ja lehtiä on paljon niin voiko olla niin että marjoille ei jotenkin jää tilaa…

This year seems to be a decent apple year, there was a huge amount of flowers in the spring after all. When it comes to berries, it’s not that good a year. All the red- and blackcurrants have been picked and there was so much less of them when compared to last year. Especially the redcurrants are not thriving. I was wondering if a berry bush can be too thick, when there’s so much of branches and leaves… if there’s just not enough room for the berries then?

 

Kävin ulkomaisten vieraittemme kanssa poimimassa mansikoita, ja sen jälkeen niitä on ahkerasti pakasteltu. Jossain oli vihje että kannattaa kuivata mansikoita hieman ennen pakastamista, niin sitten ne eivät pakasteesta sulatettaessa ole niin sellaisia mössöisiä kun nestettä on vähennetty jo ennen pakastamista. Mansikoita tuli joku kymmenen kiloa pakastettua! Mustikoitakin on poimittu paljon, seuraavana olisi sitten vuorossa puolukat.

We had some friends from abroad visiting us in August, and we went to pick strawberries with them. After that we’ve been freezing the strawberries. Somewhere there was a tip that if you dry the strawberries for a while before freezing them, then they won’t be so mushy when defrosted. We froze ten kilos of strawberries this year! We also have a lot of blueberries, and next up will be the lingonberries.

Sieniä on ollut ihan valtavasti. Jätän sienestyksen mielelläni puolisolle joka ei hirvikärpäsistä hätkähdä, mutta lähimettään uskaltaudun minäkin. Yhden viikonlopun partioleirillä oli ihan mielettömästä mustatorvisieniä, ja ohjelmaan osallistuminen jäi meidän osaltamme vähän vähiin kun koko ajan piti vain sienestää!

There are a lot of mushrooms this year. I usually leave mushroom picking to my other half because I don’t get along with the elk flies. One weekend we were at a scout seminar event and there were so many black trumpets that our participation in the program was left to a minimum because we just had to pick mushrooms!

 

Ostin Tartosta uuden värityskirjan vaikka minulla on niitä tosi paljon jo ennestään. Lisäksi löytyi sellaisia väritystarroja, niitä on hauska väritellä koska ne ovat niin pieni urakka kerralla. Elokuussa tuli väritettyä enemmänkin, etenkin kun sattui värityksestä kiinnostunut vieras, jonka kanssa siinä värittelimme, joimme viiniä ja turisimme. Aivan loistava tapa viettää perjantai-iltaa!

I bought a new coloring book from Tartu even though I have many already. I also found coloring stickers, which are fun to color because they are a small job at one standing. In August I’ve been coloring more than before, especially when we had a guest who also enjoyed coloring. So we spent evenings coloring and drinking wine. The perfect way to spend a Friday evening!

Sain amerikanserkultani tuliaisina ihanan teippilaatikon! Teippivalikoimamme varmaan tuplaantui kerralla. :) Kuvassa laatikon yllä on Viron-reissultamme ostetut teipit mukana, eli tässä tämän kesän saldo.

I got a wonderful souvenir from my American cousin. She brought me this box of paper tapes and this probably doubled our tape stash. In the picture there's also the tapes we bought from our trip to Estonia, so this is our this summer's haul of tapes.

Kukkaloistoa / Flowers flowers flowers

Tämä uuden kotimme puutarha on ihmeellinen, se jaksaa jatkuvasti yllättää uudenlaisilla kukkasilla pitkin kesää! Kyllä on mahdottoman upeasti suunniteltu puutarha!

The garden of our new home is amazing, it keeps delighting us with new kinds of flowers throughout the summer. It is an extremely well-designed garden!

Häävalmisteluja / Wedding preparations

Kuten taisin mainita, tänä kesänä juhlitiin häitäni heinäkuun alussa. Laitan valmisteluista kuvia ja ehkä myöhemmin sitten itse juhlista, kunhan saan viimeistellyt kuvat kuvaajalta. Tällä hetkellä siis vain itse otettuja kuvia. :)

As I might have mentioned, my wedding was in the beginning of July. I will post a few pictures from the preparations and maybe more later of the actual celebration once I get the final photos from the photographer. So only my pictures for the moment. :)

Kasvatin jokaiselle vieraalle oman huonekasvin, vaahtera-aulion, jonka ruukussa oli nimikyltti. Nämä oli b-suunnitelma, sillä alkuperäinen suunnitelma oli kasvattaa pikkuruisia omenapuita, mutta valitettavasti 151 siemenestä iti vain kuusi, ja niistäkin vain neljä selvisi häihin asti. Laitoin sitten omenapuut kaasoille ja muille vaahtera-auliot.

I gave each guest their very own house plant called "parlour maple" or abutilon (Abutilon x hybridum). The plants acted as name tags for seats. These were my plan B, since plan A was to grow tiny apple trees for the guests. Unfortunately only six of the 151 sowed seeds sprouted, and four of them survived until the wedding. I gave the maids-of-honor the apple trees and everyone else got a parlour maple plant.

Häiden väreiksi ajateltiin juuri tätä yhdistelmää: niittyleinikki ja koiranputki. Näitä löytyi juhlissa joka pöydästä!

The colors of the wedding were the colors of buttercups and cow parsley. These were on every table!

Kampaukseni häissä oli aivan mahtava, olin siihen erityisen tyytyväinen! Hiuksiini laitettiin neilikankukkia, tulilatvaa, krysanteemia ja harsokukkaa. Nutturan pohjana on valkki, opinpahan uuden sanan, se on sellainen nutturadonitsi!

My hairdo in the wedding was astonishing, I was especially happy with it! There were carnations, flaming Katies, chrysanthemum, and baby's breaths. Underneatht the flowers and curls there's a bun shaper, which I got to keep.

Yllätyspostia ja huonekasveja

Jo viime viikolla sain mukavaa postia salaiselta neuleystävältäni, mutta en millään ehtinyt saada sitä blogiin asti ennen kuin nyt. Viikonloppuihin tuntuu kasautuvan kaikki hommat mitä ei kerkiä viikolla tekemään. Kiitoksia kivasta yllätyksestä! Askartelulehti on täynnä hauskoja ideoita, eikä yhtään haittaa vaikka on viime vuoden, ajankohtainen silti! :)

Last week I received mail from my secret knitting pal, but I didn't have the energy to post about it until now. All the smaal things left undone during the work week are left to do on the weekend. Thank you for the pleasant surprise! The craft magazine is full of fun ideas, and it doesn't bother one bit that it is last year's magazine. :)

Kevät on täällä, ja lumetkin ovat melkein sulaneet, vaikka hiihtolatujakin tästä kunnasta vielä löytyy. Olen kylvänyt jo joitain siemeniä ikkunan alle kasvamaan, tomaatit jo itävätkin. Kaheli joulukaktus on taas intoutunut kukkimaan, vastahan se kukki (kuten kuuluukin) joulukuussa. Ehkä se vaan tykkää olla vanhassa voikirnussa. :D

the spring is here, and the snow is nearly gone, even though there are still some ski tracks in this municipality. I've sowed some seeds by the windod, and the tomatoes are already sprouting. The crazy Christmas Cactus is flowering again, even though it created flowers in December, like it is supposed to. Maybe it just enjoys its life in the old butter churn. :D

Kuvasin samalla mangopuun ja avokadon, joista jälkimmäinen on taas hujahtanut pitkän matkan ylöspäin vaikka kuinka yritän saada sitä haarautumaan leikkaamalla sitä.

I took pictures of the mango tree and the avocado tree, the latter having recently grown many inches upwards, even though I try to get it to fork by cutting it.

Uusi orkideakin jaksaa edelleen kukkia, vaikka siitä on jo pari kuukautta kun sen ostin!

Tässä vielä lähempää näitä istutuksiani. Pienet vihreät kasvit ovat omenapuun taimia oman pihan omenoista. 

Here's a closer look on my indoor garden now. The small sprouts are tiny apple trees from the apples in our garden.

Olimme Saksassa reilu viikko sitten, ja siellä oli jo ihan kevät! Ehkä päivitän siitä reissusta myöhemmin blogiinkin, tai ainakin pitää hehkuttaa siellä tehtyjä lankahankintoja (lanka joka alkaa tuplaveellä...). Nyt toistaiseksi sieltä vain kuva kauniisti kukkivasta mimosasta.

A bit over a week ago we were in Germany, and it was already spring there! Maybe I'll post something about that trip later, or at least I need to blog about some yarn I found there (a brand that starts with the letter w...). For now I'll just put a picture of a lovely blooming mimosas.
